Grocery and Drug Stores
Most large retail grocery stores now carry a large selection of gluten free products. You can usually find them in a gluten free aisle or a health food aisle. Many of the stores have items clearly marked on the shelving, however always check labels, as stores are often rearranging shelves and sometimes may forget to remove a sign.
Farmers’ Markets
A day out at the farmers’ market is always fun, and the market can be a treasure trove for gluten free shopping. You’ll find gluten free meat, gluten free cookies, gluten free perogies, and more.
If you are not familiar with a vendor at the market, talk to him or her before buying. Ask what’s in the product and how it is prepared. Be sure you feel comfortable with your purchase before you buy it.
Health Food Stores
Edmonton has many neighbourhood health food stores that carry products without gluten. Check your local store to see what’s available. In smaller towns outside of Edmonton, you might find the health food store to be the best local source of gluten free foods. Pay these stores a visit, read your labels, and find something delicious.
Restaurants in & Around Edmonton
Not so long ago, celiacs didn’t have many options for dining out gluten free in Edmonton. But over the past years, it has become much easier to eat gluten free meals in restaurants. More and more restaurants are adding allergen lists online, indicating gluten free items on their menus, or offering separate gluten free menus with lots of options for you to choose from.
This is great news for the celiac community! If you’re looking to dine out gluten free, Edmonton has a wide variety of choices.
The Canadian Celiac Association Edmonton Chapter is happy to share with you a great resource for finding restaurants in Edmonton and area that can safely accommodate the gluten free diet, and highlight the certified and 100% gluten free locations.
Remember when visiting restaurants to let the staff know about your gluten free diet and to ask them to take extra precautions while preparing your food.
